Own Your Own Energy
Once a ground-source system makes sense for your site, the next question is how to fund it. For some agricultural operators, Geothermal-as-a-Service is the right fit — clean heating and cooling with no capital out of pocket and nothing to maintain. For others, the borefield is a 50-year asset worth owning outright and passing down. The right path depends on your operation, your balance sheet, and your goals. Tell us what works best for you, and we’ll meet you there.
This page is about ownership. When you want the asset on your own balance sheet, Fifty Under works as your developer, owner’s advisor, and long-term operator. You own the system, surface and subsurface. We evaluate whether geothermal genuinely pencils for you, design it, assemble and manage the trades who build it, steer the permitting and the tax credits, commission it, and then monitor, operate, and maintain it for the decades that follow.
Owning a system this long-lived only makes sense if it pencils before anyone breaks ground. So we start the same way we start every project: as joint diligence with our farmer partner. Information moves both ways under a mutual NDA. Engineering and assessment are grounded in how your operation actually runs. The numbers get modeled openly — and if geothermal isn’t the right investment for you, we’ll say so. Only when ownership clearly works on your side do we move to build.
You own it. We develop it and run it.
You put the capital in and hold the asset — surface and subsurface — as a 50-year investment you can pass down. Fifty Under brings the expertise: we make the system happen and keep it running, so ownership never means going it alone.
Advise
We evaluate whether GSHP is the right investment for your operation — subsurface, site, and loads — then design and engineer the system and borefield around how your farm actually runs. You get an honest answer before you commit capital.
Develop
We assemble and manage the drillers and trades, run the permitting process end to end, and secure the incentives you’re owed — the federal ITC and any state-level credits — then commission the system and hand you a working asset. You own it; we make it real.
Operate
For the multi-decade life of the asset, we monitor the equipment, schedule maintenance and repairs, order parts, and take on the major overhauls. You own a 50-year asset without having to run it yourself.
- Feasibility & site assessment — subsurface, loads, and layout.
- GSHP merit evaluation — an honest go / no-go on ownership.
- System & borefield design — engineered to your loads.
- Subcontractor selection — the right drillers and trades.
- Construction management — we run the subcontractors, not you.
- Permitting, start to finish — filings, approvals, inspections.
- Incentives & tax credits — federal ITC and state programs.
- Debt financing — we help you arrange it, if you’d rather not fund it all in cash.
- Commissioning — verified performance before handover.
- Monitoring, operations & maintenance — for the life of the asset.
Own the asset. Keep the upside.
When you own the system, you own everything it produces — the full energy savings, the tax credits, and a borefield engineered to outlast the equipment on top of it. The capital goes in once; the value stays in the family.
The federal Investment Tax Credit and available state incentives flow to you as the owner, not to a third party. We manage the process end to end so the credits you’re owed actually land.
And ownership doesn’t have to mean writing one large check. As part of our work, we can help you arrange debt financing — so you can hold the asset and still spread the cost over time.
About these charts. Illustrative model — not a forecast, a quote, or an offer. The fuel path reproduces the rising, compounding pattern characteristic of the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s Heating Oil & Propane Update and Natural Gas Monthly price series; it is a modeled cumulative series in that pattern, not a single historical price curve. The ownership line shows an upfront capital cost net of the federal Investment Tax Credit, followed by ongoing operations and maintenance. Payback timing, the size of the credit, and the shape of both curves depend entirely on your site, your loads, your incentives, and the terms you sign.
The bottom line
You trade a bill that never ends for an asset you own outright. You keep the savings, you keep the credits, and the borefield is there for the next generation — while Fifty Under does the work of building it and keeping it running.
Ownership is a financing choice.
Owning the system rather than subscribing to it isn’t a different technology or a bigger bet on geothermal — it’s simply how you choose to fund it, once the investment already makes sense for your site. Fifty Under does the hard parts either way: the engineering, the drilling, the credits, and the decades of operation.
